This past weekend we took the kids camping at a gorgeous lake that’s just 40 minutes from our house – somehow, after living here for almost 10 years, we’d never been before!

It was everything you'd want in a campsite – clean, quiet (well, except for my kids), and the view was stunning.

It was such a great excuse to just be physically active for hours on end. We played frisbee in the grass, the kids helped carry firewood, and they even held hands as we ran the 0.5mi to and from the playground multiple times a day… It was straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. They do NOT normally hold hands. This was weird.

To keep them busy while Ben cooked breakfast, I took them on a scavenger hunt. And later in the day we hiked and saw tons of these weird giant beetles that we were told were harmless…

which we later learned are called Blister Beetles because they secrete a venomous blistering agent when they feel threatened! Thankfully they were all too busy mating to notice us.

I do have a point.

This is exactly what we talked about in last week’s article – finding ways to inject movement into our daily lives as much as possible.

Even though I was “supposed” to do a lower body workout over the weekend, I did no formal exercise (I did sneak in a few monkey bar pull-ups), I didn’t do a HIIT, and I didn’t pay attention to my step count.

We were just active – having fun, playing outside, climbing, jumping, running.

Your structured workouts matter – they are how you build muscle and move toward your body and health goals. But this kind of unstructured movement matters at least as much.

The more you can create opportunities like that – walks, hikes, playing in the backyard or going to the park… you compound your results without adding pressure or stress. This is a huge part of what we mean when we talk about “sustainable health,” and as such, it’s one of the things we dial in during The Strategy Session – a live video call where I walk you through your personalized plan for building strength and creating an efficient metabolism, tailored specifically to your body, history, lifestyle, and goals.
