St. Patrick’s Day comes with a lot of fun traditions—green everything, leprechauns, four-leaf clovers… all reminders of luck.🍀

As you’re looking for your one pair of green socks this morning, or maybe while you’re sipping on green beer this evening, take a minute to recognize just how lucky you actually are.

It’s so easy these days to compare ourselves to people who seem to be doing “better” — more successful, more famous, more fit, more… skilled at chess? (Seriously, you can always find something to feel behind on.)

But take a step back. Look at your life from another perspective.

  • If you can walk, you’re lucky! You get to step outside and take a stroll through your neighborhood.
  • If your joints allow you to bend and stretch, you’re so lucky! You get to move freely.
  • If your body lets you break a sweat, lift weights, or chase your kids, you’re incredibly lucky.

I’ve cared for countless people in the ER who would have given anything just to go for a jog again, to hit the gym and feel strong, to cook and enjoy a healthy meal with their families. Things we take for granted every day.

So if your life allows you to move, build strength, and care for your body in a way that will serve you for years to come — don’t waste that gift.

You don’t have to work out. You get to.
You don’t have to make healthy choices. You have the privilege to.
