If you’ve spent years believing that more cardio is the answer — that the path to a leaner, healthier body means endless running on a treadmill — I have a message that you’re going to love to hear:

You can stop.

And the thing that actually works is more enjoyable, takes less time, and pays you back for decades.

By the way, I want to be clear: I’m not anti-cardio. It gives plenty of real benefit, no one is denying that. But if your goal is to change your body and protect your health after 40, cardio alone is the slow lane.

Here’s why strength training is the express route.

When you do cardio, you burn calories while you’re doing it, and then you stop. When you build muscle, you change your body’s engine. Muscle is metabolically active tissue — it burns calories around the clock, makes your body more insulin-sensitive, supports your bones, and is the single best predictor of how independent and capable you’ll be at 70 and 80. This is what I mean when I say muscle is medicine. It really, honestly, truly is.

And here’s the part that surprises women most: strength training is what actually creates the lean, toned look they thought endless cardio would give them. Cardio can shrink you. Strength reshapes you.

If you’re newer to this, start simple this week:

  1. Two strength sessions. That’s enough to start. You don’t need to be in the gym five days a week.

  2. Focus on the big movements — a squat, a hinge (like a deadlift), a push, a pull. These give you the most return for your time.

  3. Pick a weight that’s pretty challenging by the last 2-3 reps. “Challenging” is where the magic happens. Light and easy keeps you comfortable; it doesn’t change your body.

Two sessions. Four movements. That’s a real, complete starting point — and you’ll likely feel stronger and more capable within the first couple weeks. There are few things more motivating than picking up something heavy and realizing you’re stronger than you were last week.

If you want to be shown exactly what to do — no guessing, no Googling random workouts — check out Your First Strength Program. It’s a simple, physician-designed plan to get you training effectively and confidently from day one.

Next week, I’ll show you why willpower isn’t your problem — and the trillions of tiny allies you can recruit to help out.
